The Complex Chemistry of Whisky: A RSC talk
On the 7th of February, our very own Will Kew presented an engaging RSC talk on the chemistry of whisky, along with a tasting session, in the elegant Royal Society of Edinburgh. The completely sold out event was packed full of whisky connoisseurs and chemists who were all eager to learn more about the complex chemical nature of whisky - and possibly even more eager to sample some of the rare Scotch whiskies that Will had provided!
The talk explored the whisky making process for four different whisky samples, where the effect that each stage had on chemical composition was explained. During the talk, Will also encouraged us to smell some sniffer pots in order to identify some of the core flavours of the whiskies, and told us at which times to try each whisky as he explored the different types of whisky.
Overall, it was a fantastic talk and amazing evening, well done Will!
